The recipe for Aleppo soap, made in the ancient city of Aleppo, is centuries old. It contains only two natural ingredients, olive oil and laurel oil, and was traditionally produced in a UNESCO World Heritage site. This Aleppo soap is cold processed and contains 40% laurel oil. This distinguishes it from more common variants of Aleppo soap, which are hot processed and typically contain a lower percentage of laurel oil. As a result, the nutrients of the oils are better preserved in the soap, and the soap, due to the high concentration of laurel oil, is particularly suitable for sensitive or inflamed skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Aleppo soap for my hair?

Yes! Aleppo soap is a natural and gentle hair cleanser, made with olive oil and laurel oil, free from aggressive chemicals that can strip the natural oils from the scalp. The moisturizing properties help nourish the scalp and combat dryness, making it an excellent choice for those looking for a more hydrating alternative to conventional shampoos.

Moreover, the antibacterial and antifungal properties of laurel oil support scalp health and can help reduce dandruff and irritation.

What is lye and is it still in the soap?

Lyew is another word for a chemical substance called sodium hydroxide.

This chemical substance is found in the ash of burned hardwood that was originally used to make the first pieces of soap in history.

However, today we use a purified lye to produce better quality soap.

Technically, this is not a completely natural ingredient. However, this chemical substance is essential for making soap and cannot be omitted.

It is responsible for initiating the saponification process, the chemical reaction that converts fats into soap.

During the curing of the soap blocks, the lye disappears from the soap as it is consumed by this saponification process.

Therefore, the final product you buy contains no lye anymore.

The Ingredients

  • Olive oil

Traditional cold-pressed olive oil is naturally rich in vitamin E and provides a mild, gentle, pleasantly scented, and nourishing soap.
  • Laurier oil

Laurier oil is an effective cleaner with antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-itch properties. This gives the soap its cleansing power and makes it effective for sensitive skin.

  • Loog

Originally obtained from wood ash, but nowadays sold in purified form. Sodium hydroxide (lye) is essential for making soap. However, the soap no longer contains lye once it has cured.
